White Tiger, Spider-Girl, Ghost Rider and Jason Todd Appear at London Toy Fair 2016

lego heroes

We’re in the midst of London Toy Fair 2016, with a big no-photos-allowed display for Lego taking up a large space amongst the other toys. And it looks as though all the DC and Marvel Superhero sets for Summer 2016 have been on display, including a lot of new figures never seen before – and for some very unexpected characters!

Brick Fanatics report seeing the following at the event:

Web Warriors Bridge Battle – this set features Spider-Man, Spider-Girl (Mayday, it seems), Scarlet Spider (Amadeus Cho), Aunt May, Green Goblin and the Scorpion.

Ghost Rider’s Bike – with Ghost Rider and his bike, teaming up with Spider-Man against Hobgoblin on his glider.

Doc Ock’s Tentacle Trap with Spiderman, Doc Ock (as a figure and as a giant mech, which may be in line with how the character was seen in ‘Dying Wish), Vulture, White Tiger, and Captain Stacey.

Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Santorum – it appears that this set has Dr Strange, Wong, and possibly Dormammu.

Scarecrow’s Harvest of Fear – this set has Scarecrow and Killer Moth teaming up against Batman (who is wearing some kind of gas mask). There’s also a farmer, and apparently Scarecrow is riding a combine harvester

Killer Croc’s Sewer Smash – Killer Croc returns as a big-fig here, along with a load of villains – Captain Boomerang, Katana (both tying in to Suicide Squad, I guess) and Red Hood!

These are just reports at the moment – as we’re still a few weeks away from the European Toy Fairs beginning in earnest, take this with a grain of salt until they get officially unveiled likely in February. Seems like a big year for superhero Lego, though, if we can trust the reporting!

Warner Bros Reveal Logos for their Next Few Movies

Over the week Warner Bros and DC unveiled the logos for their upcoming superhero movies, rolling out through 2020. Included is next year’s Wonder Woman movie – which also debuted first footage at a special event earlier in the week – as well as Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern Corps and Cyborg.

Each character will be joining the Justice League (although we don’t know what that’ll mean with regards to the Lanterns – likely either one will join the team, or the whole bunch will fight the Justice League, you know how superhero meet-ups tend to work).

Gal Gadot will be Wonder Woman in her movie next Summer, which’ll be set in the past, during the War. She’s also been seen, of course, in the trailers for Batman Vs Superman.

Jason Momoa’s Aquaman will be in cinemas in Summer 2018, with Blake Lively apparently cast as Mera.

The Flash will appear just before him, though, in March 2018, with Ezra Miller cast as the fastest man alive.

2020 will see Ray Fisher to come the screens as Cyborg, Victor Stone.

Before, as the final part of the movie wave so far revealed, we come to the Green Lantern Corps. No date has been set for this movie yet, and nobody has been cast for it – or even who the lead Green Lantern will be. Hal, John, Guy or Kyle? We’ll have to see.

Steven Moffat to Leave Doctor Who After Series 10, Chris Chibnall Steps In

It took a lot of gin and tonic to talk him into this, but I am beyond delighted that one of the true stars of British television drama will be taking the Time Lord even further into the future. At the start of season 11, Chris Chibnall will become the new showrunner of Doctor Who. And I will be thrown in a skip.

So says Steven Moffat, with the news that the showrunner for Doctor Who since series 5 will be leaving after the next series in 2017, and that Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall will inherit the role subsequently. Moffat has been in charge of the series since the arrival of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor, and has seen several companions and two other Doctors introduced in the meantime.

His final series, the 10th, will not be released until 2017, however, meaning this year all we’ll have of Doctor Who is a Christmas special at the end of the year. This is apparently so as to give Moffat’s big finale a proper send-off, although it seems more likely that the BBC want to keep it off the airwaves for a year in order to rebuild a little interest after declining viewership through 2015.

The current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, has not stated whether he will be staying on to the Chibnall era or leaving with Moffat. There’ll definitely be a new companion by the time we reach 2017, however, following the departure of Jenna Coleman at the end of this year.

The Lego Symbiote is Spectacular, Five-Headed

Lego regularly put out polybags, which are small bags with a simple build, or with exclusive characters inside, as bonuses for spending a certain amount on their products. Or, in some cases, just as an extra you can buy when you reach the till. These are usually very simple things, like a red-armed C-3P0 or tiny miniature vehicles. Recently, however, Lego have been stretching things… somewhat literally, in this case.

That’s an upcoming polybag featuring Spider-Man vs the Symbiote. You’ll know the Symbiote as the alien substance which bonds with Spidey and turns his suit black – before getting ripped off and taking over the body of Eddie Brock to become the Spidey villain Venom. And whoever designed this one had a great time! Five heads, tentacles everywhere, it’s a regular nightmare creature. Not sure yet when or how this will be available, but typically there’s only a month or two between these things being unearthed, and them showing up in the wild.

Jessica Jones Renewed for Netflix Season Two

Netflix have announced this weekend that Krysten Ritter will be returning as Jessica Jones receives a second season, to shore up local whisky manufacturers across New York.

The announcement was made at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, which also announced things like an April release for season 2 of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Released in November last year, we likely won’t see the show return until at least the end of this year, but it joins the previously-announced and in-production second season of Daredevil as part of an increasingly-committed mini-universe of Marvel TV shows streaming through the service.

No details beyond the ‘it’s going to happen’ stage have come up yet, but we can all now happily start boldly and wildly predicting what might happen in season two. My money is on BAD Girls Inc.

Because my money is ALWAYS on BAD Girls Inc.

The Next Disney Infinity Wave Includes Ant Man, Black Panther, Vision and Baloo

Retailer B&H seem to have accidentally leaked the next wave of characters and products coming out as part of Disney Infinity, the toys-to-life video game. This wave comes alongside the Marvel Battlegrounds game, and understandably therefore features several Marvel characters – as well as one surprising entrant from the Jungle Book.

The main Battlegrounds set will be released in March, a classic-styled fight game which we already know will feature a Steve Rogers figure in the main set. Although not revealed here, each set is released with one male and one female figure – so we should probably expect for Scarlet Witch to show up. A set of Infinity Disc power-ups are also coming out, which seem to indicate a Nova Corps upgrade, Darkhawk (what?!) and Ghost Rider’s bike.

What we absolutely know for certain now is that we’ll be seeing, firstly, Black Panther. First glimpsed in the trailer for Civil War, T’Challa will be appearing in the game with a pretty similar design. The Wi-Fi signal seen on the boxes suggests that you’ll have to update the game before you can use the characters, as they’re all patches rather than existing unlockable content.

We also have Ant-Man, unsurprisingly, who was teased a few months back but then never revealed for some reason. Scott Lang’s design also mirrors that seen in the movies, unsurprisingly.

A Black-Suit version of Spider-Man was released for Playstation Vita a few years back, but no other platform – until now. The symbiote-infused version of Peter Parker shows up as part of Battlegrounds.

The final Marvel character found here is Vision, which isn’t a particular surprise either given that he’s an ongoing concern in the movies. We won’t ever see Daredevil or Jessica Jones show up, apparently, as they’re appearing in mature-audience content which stands outside the remit of Disney Infinity.

Characters who do fit in, however, include the two starring characters in Zootopia, Disney’s next release. Nick and Judy, voiced in the film and game by Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin respectively, are both shown here in their full packaging.

So now onto the big surprise – a ‘Disney Originals’ character, in the form of Baloo from The Jungle Book. This is the classic version of the character who sings about Bear Necessities and likes eating and drifting down rivers, and seems intended to tie-in to this year’s live-action Jungle Book film where he’ll be appearing with the voice of Bill Murray. Disney Infinity aren’t able to offer four-legged characters to play with yet, but Baloo was always more comfortable on two legs anyway.

We should likely expect all the figures to be released this March.

Kylo Ren To Mope About Balefully at Disney Parks From February

kylo disney

Beginning next month, glossy-haired third generation overcompensating Sith Apprentice Kylo Ren will start appearing as a costumed character at both Disneyland and the Walt Disney Worlds.

He’ll be appearing in, of course, the new Star Wars areas, which were redeveloped within the parks as part of a Force Awakens branding. Kylo will be joined by Stormtroopers, Chewbacca, and “other Star Wars characters”, which hopefully means Maz Kanata will be popping up somewhere in order to flirt with anybody with a beard. Other TFA concepts to pop up at the STar Wars Launch Bay will include the First Order Star Destroyer and a hidden Resistance base.

For clarity, and because I can never remember either, Disneyland is the one in Paris and the Walt Disney Worlds are in California, Florida and Anaheim… whatever Anaheim is.
